Family brand is a situation in which the parent brand is already associated with multiple products through brand extensions.
Example of family brand:
Apple Computer’s original iPod is referred to as the iPod Classic. Later, Apple introduced the iPod Nano, a smaller version of the classic. Then came the iPod Shuffle, a very small, light weight MP3 player. Finally, Apple introduced the larger, iPod Touch; a touch screen MP3 player that allowed users to add functionality through apps to their units.
The original iPod Classic was the original branded product. Apple introduced other versions of their MP3 player, thus extending their line of MP3 players; Apples family brand of iPod’s.
